DJ'in at Skeleton Key [Feb. 5th, 2009|08:19 pm]
[Current Location |The DJ booth]
[music |Column One]

I'm DJ-ing at Skeleton Key Tattoo Friday night (Feb 6.) 7pm until whatever. 1739 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland. THere is also a band playing called "The Blair Rich Project" who I am too lazy to google.

I am billed as spinning "Turkish Psych and Electronic" which I can't really argue with but I am trying not to feel constrained.

Favorites of 2007 [Jan. 28th, 2009|08:05 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[music |The Family Elan]

January 2009 - time for my favorite records of... 2007!

Download a ZIP file with one song from each record here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/2jrq2b

If you like what you hear and need to know more, there's Google, Discogs.com, YouTube, or of course you can comment here.

My favorite records of 2007, in alphabetical order:

Beirut "The Flying Club Cup"
The one-man phenom takes on turn of the century France. Horns, hand drums, fabulous vocal harmonies, all layed down one track at a time. Way back when I posted my favorite song from this album, "Nantes", so I've put another one up this time.

Derniére Volonté "Toujours"
Brilliant limited 7" from the guy that brought you the best record of 2006.

Ex.Order "Corporate Control"
It took long enough - Ex.Order released their first proper album since 1998's "The Infernal Age". Heavy as hell german power electronics with great samples and distorted-to-fuck vocals. Well worth the wait!

The Family Elan "Stare of Dawn"
Excellent psychedelic folk from Glasgow.

Hala Strana "Heave the Gambrel Roof"
Hala Strana is a Steven R. Smith project (Jewelled Antler collective, Thuja, Mirza.) Nicely layered instrumental home recordings that simultaneously invoke an old-world feel and acid sensibilities. Dig it.

Herz Jühning "Faces"
Because everything Galakthorrö releases is gold. Brooding analog industrial a la Haus Arafna and friends.

November Növelet "Magic"
November Növelet released my favorite record of all time in 1999, and they finally released the follow up. The Arafna's took NN in a "pop" direction, or whatever you want to call it, but it's still hits that nice not-too-slick Galakthorrö sound, and that sweet old-school analog vibe.

Ólöf Arnalds "Vi∂ Og Vi∂"
It's like Joanna Newsom or Vashti Bunyan, but Icelandic. Or something. Very sweet and very cute voice-and-guitar folk, and I love it. Unfortunately there's been some issue with distribution rights or something and you can't buy it at the moment.

Panda Bear "Person Pitch"
Panda Bear is a member of Animal Collective, and his second solo LP is nothing short of mind blowing. Perfect vocal harmonies and layer upon layer of dreamy loops and reverb. It's like being on the beach far away from other people. Or perhaps like dreaming about being on the beach far away from other people.

Six Organs of Admittance "Shelter from the Ash"
Six Organs tears shit up on their latest record. It s no secret that I am a huge fan of Ben Chasney's psych-soaked folk rock raga ways.

...2008 favorites coming soon!

BDN "Great Death" LP for sale [Oct. 7th, 2008|07:05 pm]
[music |Martial Canterel]

In addition to all the shit I have up for sale on discogs.com, I am finally parting with my extra copy of Brighter Death Now's "Great Death" LP. I've never bothered trying to sell the extra copy because it is not in good shape. Side two looks not-so-good but plays perfectly. Side one looks wonderful except for a stripe of gunk across it that my best cleaning efforts have not dislodged, which causes loud and very distracting clicks on "Great Death" and "Certified Dead", and quieter ignorable noise on "Evisceration." Before I cleaned it the entire side was unplayable.

I'm entertaining offers from you, my LJ friends (who I KNOW are all totally into classic Swedish death industrial,) because it would be less of a pain in the ass to give a refund to you should you regret your purchase.

So email me a cash or trade offer: katheudo@yahoo.com or hit me up in person and we'll see what happens.

Some music [Sep. 9th, 2008|09:24 pm]
[music |Alela Diane]

Here is some music I can't stop listening to

Festival "Valentine"
I can't stop listening to the Festival record. It is called "Come Arrow Come" and it was released this year on Greg Weeks' Language of Stone label which has yet to disappoint. Two sisters singing great harmonies. Kind of like Cocorosie but way better.

Fern Knight "Silver Fox"
Fern Knight is an Espers sound-alike psych-folk group from Philadelphia. As far as I'm concerned that's all you need to know.

File Not Found "No Means Out"
Italo-disco synth-pop hybrid goodness.

Nate Denver's Neck "Angel of Death"
Nate Denver has a band called Total Shutdown that is supposedly totally nuts heavy shit. His solo material as Nate Denver's Neck is acoustic folk stuff. It's good. His CD "Ghost Alarm" comes with a book entitled "Oh Wait, You're Not a Centaur" which is a collection of 50-word stories published by Zak Sally's La Mano press.

Adolf Filter "Inner Walls"
More electro, this time super cold and from a Swedish dude with the best/worst band name EVER. This song is from a compilation.

It would be the nice thing to post like links and stuff but I think you know how to use google and discogs.com and I have had some beers.

Sangre [Sep. 7th, 2008|09:15 am]
[music |Silver Summit]

For the Victoria Noise! festival last weekend, I put together a CDR to help cover gas and food. I made 20, and they are all gone (sorry dudes.) Like the 2007 tour disc, it's a recording of me practicing at home for the show. There are three tracks (Sangre, KATADESMOS, and No) plus I guess what you could call an ambient "intro", aka getting "in the mood" by twiddling knobs for a few minutes. It's pretty rough. Maxwell says it's "like listening to a storm that's still far away." Play at high volume for maximum effect. Let me know what you think.

SwtE at Plan B Monday night [Aug. 10th, 2008|11:28 am]
[music |Yellow Tears]

click for flyer )

I'm not on the flyer, but I've been asked to perform at a "Green Scare" benefit at Plan B, 1305 SE 8th St in Portland.

Everything starts at 9pm, and I have no idea when I'm going on since I was added to the bill just last night. Hopefully early so I'm not a zombie at my Tuesday morning meetings. It will be two rooms/stages, one for ambient/ritual/noise/butoh artists, and the other for breakcore DJs. Only $5.00. Should be a blast.
